An incredible photo of Irish Paralympic hopeful Leo Hynes has been named among the AFP Sports Photos of the Year.

The brilliant snap was taken in June, capturing the athlete training in a home-made swimming pool in his front garden.

The photographer, Paul Faith, took to Twitter to announce the news and share the picture.

The triathlete was diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration in 2009, and is legally blind.

Hynes built his very own pool in his front garden in Tuam, Galway due to Covid-19 restrictions at the time meaning he couldn't train.

Irish Paralympic hopeful Leo Hynes, who is legally blind, poses in his home-made training pool at home in Tuam, Co Galway, west Ireland, on June 18, 2020.

With swimming pools closed and two-metre social distancing rules ruling out open water, Hynes went to great lengths to ensure his triathlon training for next year's rescheduled Olympics could continue.

With the help of his brothers, he constructed the pool in his front garden, allowing him to swim with a bungee chord tied to his waist, creating a treadmill effect.

"When I swim, the chord pulls me back so I keep stationary. It's a bit like running on a treadmill, you're not going anywhere. I'm swimming, but I'm not going anywhere," he told RTE in June.

"I'm going to use this all the time, even if it's wind, rain, snow, I can get in and I'm two or three metres from my front door. It's perfect."
